Howard University, the Sloan Foundation, and FIRST Chesapeake seek to train and place collegiate near-peer mentors on DCPS Robotics Teams

Rising Tides is a paid near-peer mentorship program that pairs college students with FIRST robotics teams in the greater DC and Maryland region - teams in Title I schools, rural communities, and rookie programs that need mentors most. The idea is simple: a college student who is studying engineering today speaks to a high school junior in a way no career panel can. You show what comes next. And while you do, you build the exact skills employers look for - leadership, communication, project management - on a real team with real stakes.

This is not volunteer work. Near-peer mentors are paid a semester stipend, complete FIRST's Mentor Ready training and credentialing at no cost, and gain proximity to a corporate mentor network that includes engineers from Leidos, Northrop Grumman,…
