FIRST LEGO League

Tomorrow’s innovators practicing imaginative thinking and teamwork. FIRST LEGO League is an introduction of hands-on, STEM learning with three divisions designed to inspire formative STEM concepts with young children (grades Pre-K- 8**) through fun challenges and competitions using LEGO educational materials. On a FIRST LEGO League* team (up to 10 students), children experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills as they build models and robots to solve a themed challenge.

* An alliance between FIRST and the LEGO® Group
** Ages 4-16 in the U.S. and Canada. Ages vary by country.

FIRST Tech Challenge

It’s way more than building robots. FIRST Tech Challenge teams (10+ members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format. Participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have!” Guided by adult Coaches and Mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles (like keeping an engineering notebook), while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and sharing ideas. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and can be programmed using a variety of languages. Teams also must raise funds, design and market their team brand, and do community outreach for which they can win awards. Participants have access to tens of millions of dollars in college scholarships. Each season concludes with state Championships and an exciting FIRST Championship.

FIRST Robotics Competition Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. We call FIRST Robotics Competition the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.” Under strict rules and limited resources, teams of 20 or more students (grades 9-12) are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
