Dear FIRST Chesapeake Community,

As we prepare for the start of a new competition season and a return to in-person events, I thought it timely to reaffirm our commitment to providing safe and inclusive experiences for young STEM leaders. It is a core value of FIRST Chesapeake that every young person deserves the opportunity to develop their skills and talents in a supportive and encouraging environment. I am incredibly proud to be a part of a community that is making a positive difference in the lives of young people across the region.

A safe and inclusive environment is one where everyone can learn and grow while free from bullying, harassment, or discrimination. It is an environment where individuals are comfortable and empowered to freely express themselves without fear of judgement or mistreatment. A safe environment is one that provides individuals with the support they need to grow and succeed.

In a recent blog post, our friends at FIRST Inspires described the many safety resources available within the FIRST community. I want to reiterate the value of the youth protection reporting portalFIRST youth protection program guide, and library of youth protection program training videos.

I want to personally thank everyone for their dedication to the FIRST spirit, be they veteran or rookie. I want to thank you for reaching out to your fellow mentors, coaches, or teammates to form a community. Mostly I want to thank you for the amazing season we have ahead of us, and I look forward to meeting and talking with each one of you.

Be kind, be thoughtful, be FIRST.

I want to wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Thank you on behalf of the FIRST Chesapeake Board, the staff, and myself.

Scott Turnbull
